Dr Felipe Gómez Gutiérrez holds a PhD in Spanish Language and Literatures (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, U.S.A.) and is an Associate Teaching Professor of Hispanic Studies in the Modern Languages Department, Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, U.S.A.). His publications include more than a dozen articles and book chapters on the tropical gothic and other defining characteristics in the cultural production by El Grupo de Cali. He co-edited with Juan Duchesne Winter the volume La estela de Caicedo (2009) and is currently working on the manuscript “El Grupo de Cali: Transculturaciones tropicales”, examining the transcultural incorporation of elements of Western popular culture in a body of work by the Grupo that allows for alternative readings of “La Violencia” and other major Colombian sociopolitical events and processes.
