Abstract

Based on four public lectures delivered by Mark O'Connor at James Cook University in 1982, "Gradual Time's Last Gift, A Written Speech", "The New Hieroglyphicst', "The Modern Syndrome", and "Woes, Reforms and Prospects", this is a monograph on the theory and history of written language, with special reference to the problems of English and other European languages.
