A Technical Reappraisal of T.S. Elliot's "Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"

Abstract

The recent publication of the original manuscript of The Waste Land has re-emphasised the technical aspect of Eliot's writing. The range of Pound's comments and Eliot's subsequent amendments indicates that Eliot's technical work was not all that it might have been, yet at the same time Eliot was sufficiently aware of his deficiencies to extensively re-write and edit his early drafts.

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock2 was published five years before The Waste Land, and shows a lack of maturity in the technical re-working of the poem, and also the lack of an advisor as astute as Pound.
