Abstract

As part of the Colin Roderick Lecture series, this monograph by Brian Matthews begins with an assertion of the importance of the process of "retrieval" to Australian literary study and criticism since the 1940s, whereby study returns to and rediscovers certain writers in order to make a new, a renewed or a more accurate case for their claims to serious attention. From just such a perspective, Matthews examines the work and critical response to Australin short story writers of the past.
